To kick off the new year, Moonshot Initiative hosted a Creative Resilience support meetup for filmmakers struggling during this time. Here are the key takeaways.

We know that a lot of people in our community have been feeling discouraged by the Hollywood contraction, DEI backslide, and the current political climate. We wanted to create a space for creators to convene and share our experiences, uplift each other, and brainstorm ways to keep fighting for our vision, even when the world seems to be working against us. Especially as we muddle through the dark, cold winter days, having a community to vent to, cheer on, and check in with is crucial. It’s so important for artists to support each other through the losses, celebrate the wins, and remind ourselves why we create in the first place - which is exactly why Moonshot Initiative decided to host this Creative Resilience meetup.

Our first Creative Resilience gathering on January 7 was a wonderful space to connect and support one another. We had the opportunity to exchange experiences and advice. We brainstormed some ways to help ourselves through this difficult time. Here are a few of the tools we came up with to help stay motivated and inspired:

  • Get off social media. It doesn’t have to be forever, but being more mindful of the amount and quality of time spent on socials can help keep the doom at bay. Every time you want to check your social media accounts, try instead to meditate or leave someone a loving voice message. Rewiring the habit of logging on mindlessly can help keep you inspired and limit the amount of bad news your brain takes in at a time.

  • Get involved. If you're not in a film hub, you can go to your local public TV station and ask to volunteer. You'll meet tons of filmmakers that way and gain access to equipment! Being around other filmmakers will inevitably keep your mind on your craft. Besides staying motivated to create, being a part of a community is incredibly important for our emotional wellbeing.

  • Set yourself up for success. Do one small thing each night to make the next day better. That can mean setting out a nice outfit to wear, scheduling out your day in advance, or taking some notes on a writing project you want to work on. Little changes add up. Prioritizing yourself, even in seemingly small ways, can have a huge impact on your creativity, motivation, and overall health and happiness!

To keep up the momentum, we have decided to host this meeting monthly. You can join our next Creative Resilience free virtual meetup on Wednesday, February 5 from 7-8 p.m. ET by signing up here!
