As a creative, you can't advance your career if you can't talk confidently about your work.

That's one of the topics covered on our recent episode of the No Film School Podcast, hosted by GG Hawkins. GG has a unique perspective on Moonshot and our programming, as she was one of our eight Moonshot Pilot Accelerator fellows in 2023. Through our accelerator, GG honed her pitch with the help of experts including a development exec, a showrunner, and a speech coach. Then, she had the opportunity to pitch her pilot to companies including HBO, Netflix, and more.

GG draws from this experience as she interviews Moonshot co-founders Katrina Medoff and Tracy Sayre for this popular podcast. The episode covers pitching and our nonprofit's work boosting underrepresented voices on screen.

"I wanted to share my learnings from the Moonshot Pilot Accelerator with the No Film School Podcast audience as part of my mission to make this whole career — this whole dream — of becoming a filmmaker a lot more approachable," GG said. "In my conversation with Katrina and Tracy, we reinforce the most important things to remember about pitching, including the fact that the folks hearing your pitch are rooting for you, and that the pitch itself is something you can control if you take the right steps to set yourself up for success. Pitching doesn’t have to be overwhelming!"

In this podcast episode, we discuss:

  • What Moonshot does to advance the careers of underrepresented voices on screen and behind the camera

  • Working with filmmakers and creatives in all stages of their career

  • Offering a safe space for program participants to ask questions

  • The Moonshot Pilot Accelerator (formerly WWFC's Pilot Accelerator), which helps filmmakers pitch TV show ideas to executives at HBO, Netflix, Hulu, Showtime, Warner Bros., and many more

  • How Tracy and Katrina know when they have found an excellent script

  • The mentality you need going into a pitch meeting

  • Writing the pitch before writing the script

  • Why you have to be comfortable talking about your work

It turned out very interesting! I recommend adding video content to your posts. You can do this using VHS capture. It's simple and free. I use this myself and have not yet found any cons. If you listen to my advice, I guarantee you an expansion of your audience
